Looking up at the night sky, seeing the moon and stars, can be peaceful and calming. Stargazing is very good for our well-being and you don’t have to be an astronomer to enjoy it.
Wiveton Downs and Kelling Heath in North Norfolk are perfect for stargazers of all ages as they are designated ‘Dark Sky Areas’ meaning that due to low light pollution it is dark enough to see the stars as well as seven stars of the Orion (the Hunter) constellation and the Milky Way with the naked eye.
Hickling Broad, Thurne Mill, Horsey Mere, How Hill, Herring Fleet Mill and Beccles Marshes are also good places if you want to gaze up at the Stars. It is important to wrap up warm regardless of the time of year, and bring something warm to drink and blankets.
Top Tips for Stargazing
- It’s best to go stargazing when there is not a full moon as it can be difficult to see the stars at that time.
- Make sure there are no artificial lights around, such as house/garden lights, car lights etc. The area has to be as dark as possible .
- Try stargazing at different times of the year as the sky is forever changing and you might see something different.
- Bring a ‘star map’ with you so you know where to look up at the sky. Otherwise you can download an app on your phone.
- Bring a camera to take pictures of the amazing sights you see.
