Episode two of our new Shoebox podcast Community Unboxed is now live!
This time we join Community Connectors Rainy and Sonya as they explore what makes North Earlham such a strong community.
They share the voices of local residents, uncovering the pride people feel for their area and the small acts of neighbourliness that make a big difference. Along the way, they take us to some of the places where connections grow – from Freedom Friday at Cadge Road Community Centre to coffee mornings at St Elizabeth’s Church.
You’ll hear stories of:
- Christine, an older resident who, despite mobility challenges, still feels part of the community thanks to thoughtful outreach
- John, a retiree whose digital DJ project brings music and joy to community events and people living with dementia
- Clive Lewis MP, reflecting on why these initiatives matter in a world where isolation is on the rise
- West Earlham Library, which has become a hub for knitting groups, reminiscence sessions and digital skills support
- The NR5 Family Partnership, linking organisations and groups to maximise their collective impact
Despite sometimes being seen as “an area in need,” residents describe North Earlham as rich in people – diverse, welcoming and full of those who want to make a difference. As local curate Julian puts it:
“I love North Earlham. I love the community. It’s so rich with people, diverse, different backgrounds. There’s always a buzz around here.”
Rainy and Sonya’s reflections remind us that community strength is found in everyday connections and that resilience grows when people look out for one another.
